An AM station in New York state received kudos for its performance during recent flooding.

Dave Radigan is owner of WEBO, heard at 1330 kHz in southwest New York. He spoke at this weekend’s Binghamton Broadcasters annual reunion.

Radigan is shown at left accepting a Community Service Award presented by BE's Criss Onan (second to left) and Scott Fybush (right) of Fybush.com/NorthEast Radio Watch. They saluted the station for continued service to the local communities of Tioga County during the flooding.

Broadcast Electronics released the photo and a statement: “After being flooded out of their downtown Owego, N.Y., studios and forced to move to a borrowed RV and then to a makeshift studio in Radigan’s living room, WEBO AM staff continued to provide post-flooding coverage using BE’s AudioVault and broadcasting from a BE AM 5E transmitter.”...

Updating an item I mentioned earlier:

Marty Hadfield has gone home from the hospital, according to his friend and colleague Jim Dalke.

"Thanks to the miracles of modern medicine, Marty left the hospital [Wednesday] afternoon," Dalke wrote. Dalke is editor of the SBE Chapter 16 newsletter in Seattle.

"He will be spending the rest of the week resting at home and plans to return to work next week. Like many of us who have had to deal with heart problems, Marty says this was a wakeup call to mortality and the need to take care of ourselves for the sake of those in our care."

The chair of the Nevada SECC posted thoughts to help broadcasters get ready for the upcoming national EAS test.

Marty Hadfield is recovering from a heart attack suffered over the weekend, according to his colleague Jim Dalke, who said the Clear Channel Seattle DOE is recovering at Swedish Hospital in Seattle.

"When I visited Marty this afternoon, he was in good spirits and anxious to return to his engineering responsibilities," Dalke said in an email to fellow engineers on the local SBE chapter remailer.

"His wife Catherine and his doctors may want him to slow down for a while however. The doctors are monitoring him closely and are optimistic about his full recovery."

Hadfield has a long relationship with SBE Chapter 16. He joined Clear Channel in June after working as director of engineering for Alpha Broadcasting’s Portland, Ore., operations. He has spent his broadcast engineering career in the Northwest, starting in 1976, including 17 years as VP of engineering for Entercom Seattle.

Radio as a "first informer" is a key concept for stations that want to remain relevant in the modern media age.

The National Association of Broadcasters has put out a four-minute video emphasizing that point, using Hurricane Irene as the latest evidence.

Kudos to the FCC Media Bureau, which has decided it will allow U.S. AM stations to use technologies that reduce transmitter power consumption — techniques that have been available to broadcasters elsewhere for years.
