The September issue of the NAB’s monthly newsletter Licensed to Serve is available.

Radio broadcasters making the virtual pages in the issue included those covering hurricanes, providing free airtime for candidates and, as always, charitable work.

For Hurricane Isaac coverage, WBRP(FM) in Baton Rouge and Entercom’s Louisiana outlets were cited. Clear Channel’s WRNO(FM) in New Orleans set-up an “Operation Storm Watch” and it was simulcast on four other CC stations. Cumulus stations simulcast audio feeds from TV stations that were covering the hurricane’s progress.

In Calhoun, Ga. WJTH(AM/FM) provided free time to any candidate for elected office , 10 a.m.–2 p.m. on June 16. Each candidate was allowed three minutes to state their case, so long as they didn’t denigrate an opponent. Twenty candidates took up the offer. According to the article, WJTH has done this for 35 years.

On the charitable front, WLEN(FM) in Adrian, Mich. hosted a celebrity pie auction for the Lenawee County American Cancer Society Relay for Life on Aug. 7. In Spokane, Wash. KZBD(FM) hosted a pair of concerts on Aug. 17 and Aug. 24 for the Salvation Army’s Backpacks for Kids campaign. To help with the back-to-school theme, the station’s morning show broadcast for the week in between the concerts from a moving school bus.

In Boston, sports stations WEEI(AM/FM) teamed up with the regional cable sports TV network, New England Sports Network, for a 36-hour radiothon/telethon to help the Jimmy Fund, a local cancer research and patient fund that benefits the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Total amount raised  — $3.3 million.
