Courtesy of a previous partnership on digital audio that worked out quite well, the Audio Engineering Society and the European Broadcasting Union have decided to have another crack at setting an acceptable standard, this time on IP audio.

Dubbed rather clunkily “Next-Generation AES/EBU Interface Based on IP Technology,” the goal according to a release is an extension of the AES/EBU standard and aimed at “producing a new common packet-based network standard for linear PCM audio.”

The release added that the focus would be on “audio interoperability over high-performance IP networks, with the further goal of interoperability with the EBU’s common framework for audio contribution over IP.”

The AES is encouraging interested parties to get involved. It is also encouraging participation in the related AES-X192 project headed by Kevin Gross. On the European front, the effort is going forward through Sonja Langhans’ ACIP2 group.

Langhans and Gross will be on hand at the upcoming AES convention in San Francisco, Oct. 26–29, and will participate in related sessions on the Networked Audio track.
