Kurt Hanson’s RAIN newsletter recently reported that BRS Media, an Internet domain name registrar with specialization in broadcast properties, had lodged a complaint against its rival for control of the proposed “dot radio” domain, the European Broadcast Union, after the EBU was given a spot on Internet domain name controller ICANN’s Governmental Advisory Committee.

Noting that GAC will decide who gets the domains, RAIN author Paul Maloney wrote that “Obviously, on its face, this would seem like a conflict of interest.”

In a letter to GAC Chair Heather Dryden, BRS Media Chairman and CEO George Bundy pointed out just that.

“No other GAC members or observers are a direct applicant for a generic industry-specific string like .RADIO that is contested,” Bundy wrote. “This will give the EBU an undue advantage.”

Bundy’s letter concluded with a request that the EBU withdraw its application for the dot radio domain. A summary of the complaint can be found here.
