Public comments are due by or on Aug. 17 in the FCC’s inquiry into the effects on communications of the recent “Derecho” storm earlier in the summer.

The hurricane-force winds of the fast-moving storm knocked out power and wired and wireless phone service in areas of several states.

In particular, several areas, including parts of northern Virginia, experienced 911 outages as well.

The commission is asking about the impact these outages had on consumers, hospitals and public safety entities as well as restoration efforts.

Federal Register publication triggered the comment dates.

Comments to the Public Safety & Homeland Security Bureau’s Docket 11-60 are due Aug. 17, with replies on Sept. 4.
