Cumulus Media Chicago (WLS Radio) has appointed a new chief engineer, Scott Clifton.

Clifton began his career in 1979 as a a DJ and part-time engineer in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Most recently, he managed the technical facilities for Oprah Radio, a post he'd held since its inception in 2006.

Warren Shultz, who has been chief engineer at the Chicago cluster for 22 years, is retiring. Shulz will help train Clifton as the station makes the transition, according to the company. Shulz had been waiting to retire until WLS found a replacement.

Over the last three decades, Clifton has consulted in almost every aspect of radio broadcasting, applying technological improvements and managing operations. He helped launch the PGA Tour Network on XM Satellite Radio and was Sporting News Radio Network director of engineering for nine years. Clifton also worked for 14 years with Gannett as chief engineer for WGCI(AM), Chicago.

Regional Vice President and Market Manager of Cumulus Media Dave Crowl said in a statement that he welcomed the new addition in Clifton and wished Shulz the best going forward.

“(Shulz) has provided the very best leadership and attention to detail in the caretaking and ongoing maintenance of these facilities,” Crowl said.

Scott, Please keep the quality CQUAM audio from WLS that Warren has set-up! It sounds great on my Chrysler stereo AM car radio!
