IBiquity: HD Radio Receiver Sales Double Last Year

About 734,000 HD Radio receivers have been sold so far this year, twice as many as sold in 2008.

That's according to iBiquity President/CEO Bob Struble, who told the Virtual Event's "Monetizing Audio Technology" conference that nearly a half million HD receivers had been sold through the end of September, and a quarter million more in the last two months.

The event focused on how sports teams use stations' HD Radio multicast channels to expand reach and coverage of sports franchises.

In addition to Struble, Penguins Radio and Dallas Cowboys Radio executives were some of the featured sports, radio and advertising executives during the all-day event (www.avirtualevent.com/agenda.html).

About 28,000 HD Radio receivers sold in 2006, according to Struble. That number increased to 140,000 in 2007 and then 366,000 last year.

About 1.3 million HD radios have been sold to date, according to the technology developer.

A new publication from iBiquity called "The Struble Report" reports on 2009 radio sales. Bob Struble from iBiquity reports that 2009 was a "dynamite" year for his "HD" radio. "Twice as many radios were sold this year than last", reports Struble. "What a great year it was for 2009. Building on our success, we will continue the rollout in 2010". Year-end sales figures show that, after returns, eight radios were sold in 2009 as compared to the four radios sold the previous year. Most industry experts believe that two, possible three people actually listen to digital radio in the U.S. on a regular basis. This trend is expected to continue for the next 10 or so years. The Struble Report will be published weekly by iBiquity

Here we are in December of '09 and Struble is talking about last year? What's wrong with this picture. This guy is lost in space somewhere.

"HD Sales will be well over 8 million alone next year" Really? Don't count on it. Your predictions have been WRONG every year for the past 7 years.

By any measure it's a failure. It would have been abandoned by any rational person/investor a few years back but the investment was so reckless and huge that iBiquity and the "Alliance" have no other option but to push on hoping they will live long enough to see it catch on. Very unlikely in your or my lifetime. In any event, the return on the investment will probably never be realized. Show's what greed can do. Consumers (taxpayers) will take the hit - as usual. So go ahead, believe that it's a smashing success. There's no law against deceiving yourself. Have at it.

You must work for iBiquity. You can't seem to come up with an original thought.
