New Group to Examine White Space

The SDR Forum, an industry association for the software-defined radio industry, has created a study group to examine white space issues.
Called the Test Guidelines and Requirements for Secondary Spectrum Access of Unused TV Spectrum group, its mandate is to develop test requirements and applications for the use of "cognitive" radio techniques in the unlicensed bands of the TV/radio spectrum.
A cognitive radio adapts itself to changing conditions such as interference, user demands, etc. They are often associated with "software-defined radios" or SDRs.
In the announcement, group co-chair Pat Carson of TDK stated: "The work of this new group will help the wireless industry in many ways … Our activities will expand the market for cognitive radio technologies by enabling standards to be developed based on a common set of test requirements that enable entry into the market."
Dr. Joe Mitola, another co-chair who is active in the SDR and cognitive radio field said, "Testing of cognitive radio is the crucial step in making the transition from research to full commercialization."
