Jim Farley,
long-time news director for Washington’s top-rated all-news WTOP(FM), has
announced that he’ll be retiring at the end of 2013.
Under Farley, WTOP has
maintained its high ratings and the news department has won almost every major
news award. He notes that it has won nine Edward R. Murrow Awards in the last
two years.
Farley came to WTOP
in 1996 from ABC Radio Networks where he was managing editor. Farley got his
start in radio as a “copy boy” at New York’s WINS(AM) in 1966. He was also the
last NBC News vice president of Radio News before the network was sold in 1987.
He has also taught graduate and undergraduate journalism at Fordham and New
York University.
Farley doesn’t plan
to retreat to a hermitage. He says that he’ll be a consultant for WTOP and its
owner, Hubbard Broadcasting.
