Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and fellow Illinois Democratic Sen. Richard Durban want the Arbitron Portable People Meter rollout to be delayed.
In a Sept. 29 letter to Arbitron President/CEO Steve Morris, the lawmakers stated: "Delay is in the best interest of consumers, broadcasters and advertisers." Their concern is that PPM doesn't accurately reflect the behavior of minorities; Arbitron says the PPM is accurately counting Hispanics, African-Americans and other minorities.
The letter followed one from Sens. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, and Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., with similar concerns, however those lawmakers did not ask for a delay in the planned Oct. 9 rollout.
