National Day of Listening for StoryCorps and NPR

11.25.2008

StoryCorps, the nonprofit organization dedicated to grassroots oral history, has proclaimed Nov. 28 the first annual National Day of Listening.

To aid in the effort, National Public Radio is featuring a number of its hosts participating with interviews with family members and acquaintances. These special StoryCorps segments are airing this week during "Weekend Edition," "Morning Edition," "All Things Considered," "Tell Me More" and "Day to Day."

Besides NPR regulars Scott Simon, Susan Stamberg, Renee Montagne and Frank Deford, Thanksgiving day will feature Dorothy Bush Koch interviewing her brother, President George W. Bush.

What is a "day of listening"?

"This holiday season, ask the people around you about their lives," StoryCorps states. "It could be your grandmother, a teacher or someone from the neighborhood. By listening to their stories, you will be telling them that they matter and they won't ever be forgotten. It may be the most meaningful time you spend this year."
