Minnesota Network Goes With IP Distribution System From Barix and StreamGuys

4.25.2008

Barix and StreamGuys said they provided an IP distribution architecture for a radio network based in Minnesota.

Premier Productions Radio Network is using Barix audio-over-IP hardware and StreamGuys Internet distribution to deliver live and recorded sports content to 35 stations in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

The network had been using satellite technology for program distribution. The suppliers said their IP architecture provides a reliable, scalable audio solution that reduces operational costs.

Feeds are sent from a Barix Instreamer-100 audio encoder to Premier’s studio in St. Paul; a Barix Exstreamer 100 receives and decodes the program material, where it is mixed and sent over the Internet through another Instreamer 100.

An aggregated server infrastructure from StreamGuys receives the feeds and transports them over a streaming network to point or multipoint destinations. Each of the 35 stations has an Exstreamer 100 to receive and decode the signals, along with tone decoders to trigger ads and station identification, and to signal start and end times for each feed.

The suppliers said their real-time protocol approach ensures consistently low latency for the live signals. The system distributes compressed audio at 80 kbps to the destination Exstreamers, with higher bit rates earlier in the chain.

Matt Wallace is owner of Premier Productions Radio Network.
