| Sound Devices Has New Firmware, Expands Staff |

Sound Devices’ latest firmware release for the 7-Series line of file-based digital recorders adds features including lossless audio compression, MP3 recording and multi-unit linking enhancements.
“We are especially excited for customers to explore recording data-compressed files using our on-board FLAC encoder and PC software decompression tool. FLAC greatly enhances CF cards as an effective interchange medium,” said Jon Tatooles, managing director.
FLAC is an open-source encoding algorithm used to data-compress sound files. No audio information is lost while compressing files more than 50 percent. Sound Devices said it developed a method to extend the protocol in order to keep Broadcast Wave and iXML metadata intact upon decompression.
Sound Devices also has added Yelena Akhramkov, Brian Flinn and Tim Goihl to its engineering staff.
Akhramkov comes from Shure, where she served as principal engineer, software development.
Flinn is an audio engineer and DSP programmer with experience at Shure, Electro-Voice and Crown International.
Goihl comes to Sound Devices from Hi-Techniques, where he was system architect, designing data acquisition products.
